Our Story
How it started.
Founded in 1976, The Wine Box began as a modest, hand-built cellar with just three rows of lockers, created at a time when Los Angeles collectors had few places to safely store the bottles they hoped to age. What started as a private storage initiative gradually evolved into a dedicated secure facility, and quietly became something more: a gathering place for people who saw wine not simply as inventory, but as memory, ritual, and shared pleasure.
Over the decades, successive stewards expanded the facility, built out the lounge, and gave the cellar its unmistakable character. Friday evening tastings once filled the room with the easy chaos of good bottles and better stories; later, Sunday gatherings became a beloved tradition, drawing members together around the simple joy of opening a bottle they were curious to try.
Collectors come to The Wine Box not only because their wines are well cared for, but because they feel welcome here. It offers something beyond service: hospitality. A trusted home for serious collections, yes—but also a rare Los Angeles community where collectors of all budgets can share stories, discoveries, and the occasional well-earned joke.
Today, under new local family ownership, The Wine Box carries that legacy forward: a secure, subterranean home for great wine, and a rare Los Angeles institution built as much on community and hospitality as on careful preservation.
